The Israeli military aircraft on Wednesday night bombed some targets on the Syrian-Lebanese border, Reuters reports, citing diplomatic sources in one of the Western countries.
The Syrian Army command announced that Israeli aircraft carried out air strikes on a military research center in the Damascus province. According to them, Israeli fighters violated Syrian airspace at dawn and carried out pointed bombing of the research center. The command of the Syrian Arab Army reported that in the bombing “great material damage has been caused, two officers are killed and five others are injured.” “The destruction of the Jamraya facility is a flagrant violation of Syrian sovereignty,” the military command stressed. According to him, the attack “clearly demonstrates the direct involvement of Israel, along with Turkey and Qatar, in the terrorist campaign against Syria.”
ITAR TASS’ commentary says the Israeli Air Force’s unexpected air attack on a facility of the research center of the Ministry of Defense of Syria in Jamraya added tension to the conflict.
Moscow is checking messages on the Israeli Air Force’s air strike on Syria – if the information is confirmed, this is a gross violation of the UN charter, says the Russian MFA. “Moscow has received with grave concern reports of the Israeli Air Force’s raid on targets in Syria near Damascus. If this information is confirmed, then we are dealing with unprovoked attacks on targets on the territory of a sovereign country, which blatantly violates the U.N. Charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motives to justify it. We are taking urgent measures to clarify the situation in all its details,” reads the statement on the website of the Ministry. “Once again, we urge to put an end to any violence in Syria, to prevent any outside interference and to begin an all-Syrian dialogue on the basis of the Geneva Agreements of June 30, 2012,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.
The UN has not received any information on an air strike on a military research center near Damascus, said yesterday Eduardo del Buey, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
Official authorities from the Israeli Air Force declined to comment on the information received, and said they were not going to discuss such messages with the press.
While according to the AFP, the strike was made on a convoy of weapons. On Sunday, January 27, Deputy Prime Minister of Israel Silvan Shalom said Israel can use force to prevent weapons of mass destruction from falling into the hands of the militants involved in the armed conflict in Syria.
Two weeks ago, Israel called on the UN Security Council to take urgent actions to prevent Syrian chemical weapons from falling into the hands of the militants from the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group. According to Reuters, Israeli officials are actually much more concerned that the civil war in Syria enables this radical movement, with which Israel has been fighting for many years, to get a weapon that can considerably reduce the huge advantage of the Israeli army in tanks and combat aircraft. As for chemical weapon, Israel is more afraid of its falling into the hands of the Assad regime opponents, which are “potentially hostile” towards the Jewish State. Because among them there are supporters of Al-Qaeda, Islamic ultraradical organization seeking to destroy Israel.
A few days earlier the commander of the Israeli Air Force and the Prime Minister of the state almost simultaneously made an official statement that they are seriously considering the transfer of Syrian missiles and chemical weapons to the Hezbollah radical movement, which is based mainly in southern Lebanon.
According to media reports, the day before, Major-General Aviv Koshavi, military intelligence chief, flew to Washington to meet with U.S. officials at the Pentagon. Among those to whom Koshavi spoke was also General Martin Dempsey, the U.S. chairman of the joint chiefs of staff.
At the same time, Yaakov Amidror, Head of the Israeli National Security Council, was to Moscow in order to discuss in more detail the prolonged Syrian crisis. It is reported that Amidror talked with the Russian officials about Syrian chemical weapon.
In any case, regardless of whether there was an air strike against the Syrian military center or the Syrian Ministry of Defense missile weapon convoy, it is a gross violation of Syrian sovereignty. And given that Syria is in a state of civil war, it is a demonstration of Israel’s support for forces opposed to Assad. Israel hardly realizes that thereby they unwittingly supported this anti-Israel Al Qaeda. It turns out that for the sake of short-term profit in the fight against the Hezbollah, Israel sacrifices the country’s strategic interests. Because you know if the ultra-radical Islamists come to power in Syria, the very fate of the Jewish state may be at stake. There are many examples of this both in Libya, and Iraq. It can be said that in Syria the Israelis bombed their own security.
