Kosovo leader Ibrahim Rugova, 62, has died in the Kosovo capital, Pristina. The leader of Kosovo Albanians suffered from lung cancer and was hospitalized with a complication last December 28.
Ibrahim Rugova was at the head of Kosovo Albanians' long-drawn-out struggle for separation from Serbia. In Europe I. Rugova was considered a moderate politician – a refined intellectual, he always opposed extreme forms of armed struggle, leaving that to the radical wing of the Kosovo Liberation Army headed by Hashim Tachi.
I. Rugova came to power as a result of NATO's intervention in Yugoslavia and ruled the Kosovo province for 4 years. At present the duties of Kosovo president have passed to the speaker of parliament.
