The abuse of declarative principles of law and democracy has been gaining momentum in Romania. Its election commission, referring to a Constitutional Court ruling, has once again removed from the ballot Calin Georgescu, the most likely presidential hopeful. The commission claims Georgescu has "violated the very obligation to defend democracy" and thus lost his right to run for presidency. This has already entailed mass street riots.
Let us recall a brief timeline. During the election campaign, the country's authorities half-openly played along with Georgescu, seeing him as a hider capable to take votes away from popular right-wing AUR party leader George Simion. However, this led to unexpected results — Georgescu got a clear advantage in the first round, while members of the ruling coalition from the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Social Democrats (PSD) failed to make it into the second one. After that, the Constitutional Court overturned the results as having a "Russian trace", based on "intelligence data".
After a huge public outcry, the election commission did register Georgescu as a second-round candidate, having failed to debunk any of the 390,000 signatures collected. In opinion polls, Georgescu emerged as the undisputed leader, by more than 40 percent ahead of his closest competitor, liberal Ilie Bolojan. Then, there was the CEC’s notorious decision endorsed by 10 out of the 14 members. Moreover, the authorities have launched an investigation into "spreading disinformation online" (under the "incitement to violence" article).
Georgescu decided to take this to the Constitutional Court. Besides, as already mentioned, supporters of the disgraced candidate and democratic values in general took to the streets of Bucharest, entering numerous clashes with the police. 13 gendarmes were injured, seven of the several hundred protesters were detained, and other rioters are still being sought for.
Georgescu coordinates his actions with leader of the Party of Young People (POT) Anamaria Gavrilă and George Simion of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). Notably, the latter was the one to originally compete with him. They declared that they "go all the way for the same values: peace, democracy, freedom." Simion, who has a chance to win the race himself in case his colleague gets blocked at the end of the day, called the situation in Romania a coup, asked for help "from our foreign friends" and promised to undertake activities aimed to "peacefully restore democracy."
Referred to as friends is primarily the United States, where Team Trump regard both Georgescu and Simion as politicians fitting into the paradigm of rebuilding Europe on the new "house of nations" principles under American tutelage. Elon Musk has dubbed the Romanian devvelopments madness and linked them to globalists and George Soros. Moreover, there has been evidence that Musk and Tucker Carlson are going to arrive in Bucharest on April 4th to attend the Eastern European Peace Forum.
Meanwhile, the European Commission found no reason to assess actions by official Bucharest.
"We have no comments regarding the decision by Romania’s Central Election Bureau. Elections are a national competence. The Commission does not interfere in the Romanian electoral process, which remains a matter for the Romanian authorities and ultimately the Romanian people," an EC spokesman said. Interestingly, when Europe got unpleased with election results in Georgia, no one called it an internal thing.
Well, there is nothing surprising about that. After all, European bureaucracy is the instigator, guardian and patron of anything done by the Romanian authorities, who just follow Rutte and von der Leyen’s "guidelines", by and large. The EU, as we have repeatedly pointed out, is preparing for decisive military and political battles for existence in its current form. And repressions against Georgescu, as well as Milorad Dodik of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is sort of "strengthening the battle lines" before the fighting gets underway.
Another news, though not formally related to the election, is that Romanian pilots from the Carpathian Vipers air squadron are preparing for an air mission over the Baltic Sea off the Russian coast. "A detachment of four F-16 multirole fighters, which will carry out air policing tasks in Lithuania, has been certified at the 86th Borcha Airbase. Its military personnel have been trained to perform at the highest level. The NATO-led mission plays a crucial role in protecting Baltic airspace and strengthening collective security. With our presence, we demonstrate Romania's commitment to protecting its allies and actively contribute to deterring any threat," Romanian Air Force spokeswoman Florentina Rebega said as quoted by the Defense Romania military outlet.
Related not formally but virtually. Georgescu has been removed from election so that the Romanian "Vipers" keep stinging Russia — so far, notionally.
