Two Israeli embassy employees shot and killed in Washington

Washington police have reported the detention of a suspect in the shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum, which resulted in the death of two employees of the Israeli embassy, TASS reported citing Associated Press news agency.

According to the city's police chief Pamela Smith, the deceased diplomats were a man and a woman. They were leaving an event at the museum when the 30-year-old suspect opened fire. Smith said that the detainee shouted the slogan "Free Palestine" during the arrest.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi said that she had already visited the scene, the news agency pointed out.

US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social page slammed the shooting in Washington as "antisemitism." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on his X page that the incident was "a brazen act of cowardly, antisemitic violence" and promised to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

According to the CBS TV channel, several other employees of the diplomatic mission were also injured. The TV channel pointed out that the incident occurred on Wednesday evening at around 9:15 p.m. local time (01:15 a.m. GMT on Thursday).

Following the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered increased security measures at all of his country's diplomatic missions. According to him, the tragedy was the result of incitement against Israel and another manifestation of anti-Semitism. "We are witness to the terrible cost of the antisemitism and wild incitement against the State of Israel. Blood libels against Israel have a cost in blood and must be fought to the utmost. My heart grieves for the families of the young beloveds, whose lives were cut short in a moment by an abhorrent antisemitic murderer," Netanyahu said.
