Montenegro continues to actively discuss its possible membership in the NATO. Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic states that the country needs "European integration", and joining NATO would bring stability to Montenegro and other states of the Balkans. The majority of citizens don't share his optimistic stance and criticize Djukanovic's authoritarian regime.
In large cities, the people of Montenegro organize mass protests demanding the resignation of the government of Djukanovic and a referendum on joining NATO. However, the authorities don't take into account the interests of citizens and violently suppress rallies. And "democratic" European Union and NATO, where the Montenegrin leadership is desperately seeking to "drag" the country, prefer to ignore the violation of the rights of people in this small Balkan state and not to cover this topic in their media.
"Inforos" news agency Russian news agency "Inforos" interviewed Italian geopolitical analyst at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Geopolitics and Auxiliary Sciences (IsAG) Eliseo Bertolasi and asked him a number of questions about the situation in Montenegro.
The expert believes that if Montenegro becomes a member of NATO, it is likely that NATO military bases will be placed on the territory of Montenegro. "The Atlantic Alliance is US monitoring tool over Europe and it is only used for promoting geopolitical interests of Washington. To understand the importance of Montenegro's joining NATO, just look at its geographical location. Montenegro has access to the Adriatic Sea, and it is very convenient for the construction of naval bases," – said E.Bertolasi.
The Government of Montenegro ignore the call of people to hold a referendum. According to the analyst, it is a violation of democratic rights and freedoms of citizens. Despite the statements of European politicians that Europe follows the democratic principles, it has very little democracy. "The referendum is a sign of democracy, but the popular vote on the most important issues is de facto prohibited in Europe. The paradox is that in fact Europeans don't have the rights. In addition, the EU is not a union of the peoples, it is only the union of financial and political elites," – noted E.Bertolasi.
