The leader of South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) Han Dong-hoon has stepped down after parliament announced the impeachment of President Yoon Seok Yol, TASS reported citing the Yonhap news agency.

"I am stepping down as the leader of the People Power Party. It has become impossible to carry out my duties as party chief due to the collapse of the party's Supreme Council," Han said as quoted by the news agency.

With Han Dong-hoon's resignation, the party leadership will be transferred to the emergency committee.

Han Dong-hoon apologized for the declaration of martial law to his fellow citizens and supporters of the People Power faction, whose feelings were hurt by the impeachment of the president.

On December 14, the South Korean parliament announced the impeachment of President Yoon Seok Yul, which still needs to be confirmed by the Constitutional Court. Han Dong-hoon noted that he does not regret his decision to express his support for Yoon’s impeachment.

Before the vote on December 14, Han Dong-hoon called on party members to vote according to their own convictions, and the leader of the People Power faction in the parliament, Kweon Seong-dong, proposed voting against impeachment. The ruling party had 108 seats in the parliament, and 200 votes were needed for impeachment. 204 deputies voted for the impeachments. According to Yonhap, Kweon Seong-dong will act as the party chairman.
