A special team of WHO experts has urgently flown to Turkey to assess the threat of a local epidemic of bird flu breaking out among the population of the eastern region of the country.
Already three children are reported to have died in the province of Van, all of them having been infected with H5N1 virus, as British experts confirmed yesterday.
Another 20 patients are being treated in Turkish hospitals for bird flu symptoms. The main task facing WHO experts is to establish whether bird flu virus is communicable from man to man.
