The invalidation of some of the grounds for draft adjournment proposed earlier by the Russian Ministry of Defense will make it possible to increase the number of draftable young men by nearly 100,000 annually, says Col. Gen. Vassily Smirnov, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed. This would in turn allow the army to convert to a 12-month-long conscription service staring from 2008.
"The repeal of 9 out of the 25 currently valid grounds for draft adjournment would raise the number of draftable young men by nearly 100,000 each year", said the general.
As earlier reported, State Duma may consider reducing the list of valid grounds for military service adjournment before going on summer vacations.
