The Omicron subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 that have been detected in Russia are more transmissible than others, Russia’s Rospotrebnadzor sanitary watchdog said on Friday.

The Omicron subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 that have been detected in Russia are more transmissible than others, Russia’s Rospotrebnadzor sanitary watchdog said on Friday.

"Russia has already registered COVID-19 cases caused by the new variants of the virus, BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 (Cerberus). They are distinguished by higher transmissibility, meaning they spread from person to person faster," the agency said in a statement, TASS reports.

The detection of the two new subvariants in the country was reported on October 26. Only a few cases have been registered in Russia so far. The BA.4 and BA.5 COVID-19 sublineages are still dominant in the country.
