A court in Damascus has handed down a death sentence to former President Bashar al-Assad in absentia, TASS reported citing Qatari TV channel Al Jazeera.
According to it, former head of the political security directorate in the Syrian province of Daraa Atef Najib was also given a capital punishment sentence. The court found them both guilty of "crimes committed during the civil war."
