Russia said new European Union sanctions will hinder efforts to defuse the crisis in Ukraine and urged the west to persuade Kiev to hold discussions on the country's future structure before a May 25 presidential election.
The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement, that the results of referendums in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk should be a clear signal to Kiev of the depth of the crisis in Ukraine.
The pro-Russia activists who organized referendum claimed 89 percent of those who cast ballots in the Donetsk region and about 96 percent of those who turned out in the neighboring Luhansk region voted for sovereignty.
