Russia Has an Army of Intellectuals and Peasants
and a third of its officers live below the poverty line
Head of the Sociological Center of the Russian Armed Forces, Cpt. Leonid Peven, told a press conference that the bulk of the Russian army officers are the children of servicemen and indigent intelligentsia, i.e. medical doctors, teachers and engineers.
According to L. Peven, it is the children of people of these professions who mostly go to higher military institutions, since only there they may count on getting a quality and free higher education.
80 percent of the drafted personnel come from villages and small settlements. The contracted personnel are also of a peasant and worker stock.
34 percent of officers and NCOs of the Russian army live below the poverty line, Peven said. Normally the officer is the only provider in the family, since his wife has no possibility to find a job at a remote base camp.
