According to a new bill, Russian youths who try to illegally evade the conscription may be imprisoned for terms of up to two years. A spokesman for the parliamentary Committee on Defense, Nikolai Bezborodov, told journalists that a draft dodger would be fined up to $2,000 or imprisoned for up to two years.
The amendments to be made to the law on military service and conscription envision tougher punishment for other kinds of offences in the armed services as well, says the deputy.
"Absentees without leave face either assignment to a disciplinary unit or imprisonment for up to five years. Peace time deserters would be punished with imprisonment for up to seven years, war time up to fifteen years", says N. Bezborodov.
The first hearing of the bill will be held in parliament in January next year.
