The Iranian leadership announced its intention to resume, after a 2.5-years' break, nuclear fuel research. As a high-ranking Iranian official explained, this work would be supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He emphasized that nuclear fuel research and nuclear fuel production are two quite different things.
The US was quick to react to the announcement. The White House called on Iran to give up the intention to resume the research.
"We strongly oppose Iran proceeding with any further enrichment-related activities", said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack. "If Iran takes any further enrichment-related steps, the international community will have to consider additional measures to restrain Iran's nuclear ambitions", he added.
