American reporter Jill Carroll kidnapped 10 days ago in Baghdad remains in captivity.
Tuesday "Al-Jazeera" television company aired a videotape showing J. Carroll surrounded by gunmen. On the tape J. Carroll's abductors gave the United States 72 hours to free all female prisoners in Iraq or she would be killed.
NBC television company reports that the terrorists who seized the US journalist claim to belong to the "Revenge Brigade".
US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said U.S. officials were doing everything possible to win J. Carroll's freedom.
Jill Carroll, 28, worked in Iraq as a freelance reporter for "The Christian Science Monitor" and other periodicals. She was abducted on January 7 in one of Baghdad's suburbs when a car in which she was riding was ambushed by armed people. Her interpreter was killed during the kidnapping, but the driver managed to survive and told the story.
As of today, over 40 foreigners and hundreds of local people are being held hostage in Iraq.
At the end of November, four activists of a Christian peacekeeping organization - a Briton, an American and two Canadians – were kidnapped.
