US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has expressed conviction that the end of the Iraq war is near in sight. This assertion, he says, is based on the marked decrease in the number of attacks on the coalition troops and Iraqi security forces. Nevertheless, the head of the Pentagon has declined to reveal any plans for further pullout of US troops from Iraq. Now the American military contingent in that country is 138,000-strong.
The Pentagon claims that US military instructors have trained about 227,000 Iraqi soldiers and policemen. Since the beginning of the Iraq invasion in March of 2003, 2242 US servicemen were killed and 16,600 wounded in that country.
