Speaker of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov has proposed to cut conscription down to 6 months, while preserving the universal military service.
Speaking to journalists at the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly, he said: "Re-building the Russian army on the contract foundation is a dream, but the reality is such that the XXI century has not brought peace to mankind. Local conflicts go on, so I think every Russian man must be able to defend his country. But, to do away with the army hazing, conscription may be cut down to six months".
