Army General Yuri Baluyevski, Chief of the Russian General Staff, believes that withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the Georgia-S.Ossetia conflict zone may provoke a civil war in the region.
When on a working visit to the city of Ryazan, the Chief of the Russian army General Staff told journalists that "if the peacekeepers leave, what we stopped in 1992 – civil war – may break out again". He emphasized that "it were Russian soldiers sacrificing their lives who stopped the war at that time".
Yuri Baluyevski said that the allegations of the Georgian side about the peacekeeping force being ineffective are not true.
