The "Gorodskiye Vesti" ("City News") newspaper in Volgograd that on February 9 published a cartoon on a religious subject has been closed down. The directive to close down the periodical was signed by acting head of the city administration Andrei Doronin, journalists were told at the City Hall.
The drawing published by the newspaper depicted Jesus Christ, Moses, Buddha and Prophet Muhammad sadly watching a TV program where two opposing crowds of protesters are pelting stones at each other. The caption to the cartoon read: "But that's not what we taught them!".
Yesterday the General Prosecutor's Office opened an inquiry into the incident. The officials do not rule out that the newspaper's license may be revoked.
