An act of sabotage at one of the sections of the power transmission line "Kavkasioni" resulted in a stoppage of import of electric power from Russia to Georgia. At the moment more than a half of the capital Tbilisi, as well as several regions of the country, including Adjaria, have been left completely without electricity.
Georgian media report the power transmission line was bombed at several locations over the territory of the Kodor Valley. Presently repair work is underway. A letter reportedly found at one of the explosion sites says that if the line were put in order it would be blown up again.
The high voltage transmission line "Kavkasioni" links up the energy systems of Georgia and Russia. Georgia imports from Russia about 20 percent of the electric power it needs for its own domestic power supply.
