General Dostum was attending festivities on the occasion of Kurban-Bairam fete outside a mosque in Sheberghan, a town in the north-western part of Afghanistan.
When the war-lord left the mosque, a suicide bomber ran up to him.
It was Dostum's bodyguards who took the force of the explosion. A total of 23 people were injured. The general himself escaped unhurt, though in a state of shock.
Rashid Dostum has been the most influential ethnic Uzbek in Afghanistan. He was a general under Communist regime, and under the Taleban created a mini-State of his own in the north of the country. He has kept his authority under the new regime as well. Most probably, it were his old enemies the Taleban who staged the attempt.
