As reported by Pentagon officials, 31 US marines were killed when a transport helicopter crashed in western Iraq near the Jordanian boarder.
According to preliminary information, the Chinook helicopter that was transporting a unit of the First Marine Division crashed as a result of poor visibility.
A Pentagon spokesman says the simultaneous deaths of 31 troops is the worst single US combat loss since the start of Iraq's occupation.
The previous sad record was set last December when 22 servicemen were killed in a mortar shelling of a military base in Mosul. Then a shell fired by Iraqi resistance fighters hit a canvas tent housing a mess hall.
Up to this latest crash, 46 US troops had been killed in air accidents in Iraq.
