Up to 480 US nuclear arms are stored in Europe. This is more than twice what independent military analysts previously estimated.
The New York Times disclosed this on Wednesday citing a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, a non-government study group that advocates arms control and monitors nuclear trends.
According to the report, nuclear weapons are stored at eight US air bases in Germany, Britain, Italy, Belgium, Turkey and the Netherlands. The nuclear bombs are kept under American control and regulated by secret bilateral agreements. A senior military official in Europe said in response to the report's findings that the number of American nuclear weapons there had been "significantly reduced" in recent years and was now "around 200".
However, the author of the report, Hans M. Kristensen, who studied recently declassified documents, commercial satellite imagery and other documents, says the real figure is more than twice as high as that.
