Speaking at the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, one of the US State Department's top officials, John Teft, stated that the US had spent $18 million on presidential elections in Ukraine.
According to J. Teft, this sum was used to finance "the local civil society groups so that they could carry out explanatory work among the electorate", to encourage the people to come to the polls and "to provide support for the local media".
J. Teft also told senators that the Sate Department followed the same course in financing the Moldovian elections. However, the "required" show of the Moldovian peoples' will cost US taxpayers much less – only $2 million.
