A "traditional" march of Latvian veterans of the "Waffen SS" Legion and youngsters from the ultra-nationalist "All to Latvia" and "Klubs 415" organizations was held in the Latvian capital of Riga on March 16. The march was held to commemorate another foundation "anniversary" of the legion.
To stop the march, people dressed like prisoners of nazi death camps, came out on Riga's streets. Scores of people chanting "Down with fascism!" and "Death to fascists!" blocked the marchers' way.
Police could not separate the opposing manifestations, and a short scuffle ensued. Then police detained about 30 people protesting against the march of the Latvian "Waffen SS" veterans. The detainees face large fines.
In connection with the Riga events, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made a statement. Russia definitely classifies such actions by Latvian authorities as immoral and inadmissible. "It is only perverted logic that can explain a situation when legionaries hold a march through the center of the Latvian capital, while police use force against antifascists", the statement says.
