On March 29, Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Farouk Al-Shara stated that Syria would withdraw all its military forces and intelligence services from Lebanon before parliamentary elections scheduled for May.
This statement was made in a letter sent by F. Al-Shara to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. In it the Syrian Foreign Minister gives for the first time a timetable for full withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon. The Minister also notes that "the long-term collaboration between Syria and Lebanon has made it possible to reduce the Syrian military contingent from 40,000 to 10,000 troops".
For his part, Syrian envoy to the United Nations Faysal Mekdad stated that a meeting of the joint Syrian-Lebanese coordination committee would be held by April 2 to agree and approve the schedule of troop withdrawal.
