On April 5 the Kirghizian parliament should have discussed the problem of the voluntary resignation of Kirghizia's president A. Akayev. As has been reported earlier, the day before the ousted president had signed, at the Kirghizian Embassy in Moscow, a statement of his voluntary resignation starting from April 5, which should have been accepted by the Kirghizian parliament.
However, the parliament does not seem to be in a hurry to consider this question. The official explanation is the shortage of quorum to get the relevant decision approved. So the discussion of the issue has been postponed.
But the reasons for the delay of the discussion on Akayev's voluntary resignation may be somewhat different from what has been officially stated.
For example, the well known Kirghizian opposition leader, Azimbek Beknazarov, who was during the takeover chief-of-staff of the Popular Unity opposition movement, said that Akayev's resignation should not be accepted, but rather A. Akayev should be impeached. At present A. Beknazarov is also Acting General Prosecutor of Kirghizia.
A number of deputies who under Akayev's regime constituted the so-called "irreconcilable opposition" also support this view.
Therefore, it is not to be ruled out that soon Akayev's impeachment may be initiated in the Kirghiz parliament. Thus all the agreements reached earlier in Moscow at the talks of the opposition representatives with the ousted president will be null and void.
