Ukrainian president, Victor Yushchenko, who is touring the US, delivered a speech to both chambers of the US Congress. As they say, it is not every foreign leader that is afforded such an honor. As V. Yushchenko was entering the Congress hall, the attending congressmen and senators began to wave orange scarves and headgear, expressing thus their support for the Ukrainian revolution.

In his speech V. Yushchenko stated his intention to open up a new era in the US-Ukrainian relations and right away asked for financial aid.

"We are striving for not just a thaw in our formerly cool mutual relations - what we want is to create a climate of trust, frankness and partnership", said the Ukrainian leader.

When the Ukrainian president finished his speech, the congressmen began to chant "Yushchenko, Yushchenko". Judging by the reaction of the US political establishment, it was evident that the US politicians consider V. Yushchenko's visit not only as his personal triumph, but also as their own victory.

The Ukrainian leader thanked the US administration and legislators for their "support of democracy in Ukraine" during the recent presidential elections, saying that it was something like former US president Ronald Reagan lending a hand to the unification of Germany.

V. Yushchenko reiterated Ukraine’s desire to join NATO, asked US authorities to support Ukraine's admission to WTO and to ease the visa regime for Ukrainian citizens. He also called on the Congress to repeal as soon as possible the discriminatory Jackson -Vanik amendment – as he said, "that remnant of the Cold War" - with respect to Ukraine.
