China will not send any official delegation to the funeral of Pope John Paul II as a sign of protest against the presence of Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian at the pontiff's funeral.
According to a spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peking would be ready to develop relations with the Vatican only provided the latter sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan and stop interfering in China's internal affairs "under religious pretexts".
Official Peking is displeased with Italy's and Vatican's decision to issue visas to Taiwan's president.
At present the Vatican is the only European state to have officially recognized Taiwan.
