A few days ago Chechen gunmen and Arab mercenaries ganging up with them announced that they had captured "an American spy" in a European country and had taken him to an unknown destination.
This information was posted, as usual, at one of the Islamist sites in the Internet. The responsibility for the kidnapping was assumed by an organization calling itself "Badr's Islamic Squadrons" and acting, according to France Press Agency, on Chechen territory.
The terrorists affirm that Khaghiya Khalil, "an American spy with Maltese citizenship", was captured in one of European countries. They also claim to have seized his brief case with documents related to "the movements of mojaheds in Saudi Arabia and Iraq".
The statement is furnished with photos showing a man whom the captors call a hostage. He is seated on the ground next to the brief case and is holding some documents showing them in the direction of the camera. A masked man is pointing a gun at his head.
"For security reasons" the terrorists have not named the country from where the hostage was kidnapped, but promised to do that late. The gunmen claim that "the hostage confessed to having supplied the enemy with important information concerning the movements of a mojahed group in Arabia last year and also to being responsible for gathering information concerning our brothers in Iraq".
"We demand that the American occupation forced be withdrawn from the Moslem country and that foreign powers stop meddling in Moslem affairs", the statement says, failing which "all foreign governments and peoples" would suffer.
France Press reports that the "Badr's Islamic Squadrons" are headed by Sheikh Moussab al-Hamdi, a native of Saudi Arabia. The agency claims that al-Hamdi is at daggers drawn with the leader of Arab mercenaries in Chechnya, Mohammad ben Abdallah al-Saief, going under the name of Abu Omar. For his turn, Abu Omar openly calls al-Hamdi an imposter.
Journalists have failed so far to receive from Malta any official confirmation of the existence of Khaghiya Khalil or any person of that name holding Maltese citizenship.
