Autonomy for Transdniestria

The Moldovian party is ready to offer self-proclaimed Republic of Transdniestria in Moldova the status of an autonomy within its borders. The offer has been made in a document delivered by the Moldovian party to international mediators.

According to the document, Transdniestria would receive the status of an administrative-territorial entity structured as Moldova's constituent republic.

The document stipulates that Transdniestria may walk out of the union, if Moldova decides to unite with any other state or if the country loses the status of a subject of international right.

Transdniestria would be entitled to take part in implementing Moldova's internal and external economic policies.

The Moldovian politicians who worked on the document specified that Moldova would own the natural resources, movables and realty present in the region.

Significantly, Moldova's offer of autonomy for Transdniestria coincided in time with a similar initiative voiced by Georgian president M. Saakashvili in respect of South Ossetia.

Last Sunday a conference was held in Batumi on the problem of the Georgian-Ossetian settlement, but South Ossetia had not been invited to participate.

Addressing the conference, Georgian president announced his readiness to grant South Ossetia "full autonomy" and to change the Constitution of the country accordingly.

Some experts believe that the situation in Transdniestria may develop according the Adjarian scenario, with the status of autonomy conferred on it at a later date.
