Sudden Turn in Talks

The N. Korean delegation at the six-party talks dedicated to the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula currently being held in Peking declared that a nuclear threat was allegedly coming from Japanese territory where US nuclear weapons are deployed.

This declaration was caused by the American party having repeatedly used in the course of the talks the phrase "North Korean nuclear threat". N. Korean delegates reminded that Japan had for several decades been under the so-called "American nuclear umbrella", and US aircraft carriers with nuclear weapons aboard have constantly been visiting its shores.

In discussions with the US delegation, the head of the N. Korean group mentioned that the "nuclear threat" in the Far Eastern Region was coming not only from N. Korea, but also from "the neighboring countries", citing Japan as an example.

He also stressed the necessity for the US to revise its policy in respect of the deployment and the plans for the use of nuclear weapons, if the US wants N. Korea to give up its nuclear program.
