August 29, Chief Commander of the Russian Interior Forces, Col.Gen. Nikolai Rogozhkin, said that a formation of the federal troops had thwarted Shamil Basayev's operation "Fiery Summer" in Chechnya.
"Our troop formation in the Northern Caucasus has thwarted terrorists' major operation "Fiery Summer" conceived by Basayev to destabilize the situation not only in Chechnya, but also in other regions of the Northern Caucasus", said N. Rogozhkin.
The Chief Commander noted that terrorists managed to carry out only isolated acts of banditry, followed by their neutralization.
