US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard Myers made a joint statement in Washington alleging that the dispatch of a great number of US servicemen to liquidate the aftermaths of Hurricane "Katrina" would not affect the international anti-terrorist campaign, including the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to the data furnished by Gen. R. Myers, more than 41,000 National Guardsmen and 17,000 servicemen are currently involved in the rescue operations in the US regions stricken by Hurricane "Katrina". Also, 21 vessels of the US Navy, 350 helicopters and 75 aircraft are engaged in the rescue operations and reconstruction work.
Servicemen and National Guardsmen evacuated more than 75,000 people, and rescued over 13,000 people who were on the verge of death. Rumsfeld and Myers rejected the charges that the Pentagon had not been quick enough to react to an emergency.
