The last honors have been paid to Alexander Yakovlev in Moscow. None of the present-day leaders of Russia turned up at the funeral ceremony of the man who was one of the architects of the "perestroika" and the collapse of the USSR, not even his closest associates in the "perestroika"-time Politburo – Mikhail Gorbachev and Edward Shevardnadze.
Out of the current political elite, on hand to say their last goodbye to A. Yakovlev were Irina Khakamada, Grigory Yavlinski, Boris Nemtsov and Alexei Mitrofanov. They were given the floor, which they made use of. The funeral ceremony was attended also by Canada's Ambassador to Russia who, on behalf of his premier, presented his condolences to A. Yakovlev's family.
