The European Union hailed the parliamentary election held in Chechnya, calling it a step towards democracy. A statement released by the EU leadership and signed by representatives of Great Britain – the country currently chairing the European Union says that "the EU views the parliamentary election in Chechnya as an important step towards a broader representation of various opinions in Chechen society". The statement emphasizes that the EU leadership is certain "the new parliament will impart a greater degree of democratic responsibility to Chechen politics".

The EU, taking into account the rather complex situation in the republic, noted that security was assured during the polling at a duly high level.

At the same time the EU leadership called on the Russian side to look into all the reported violations observed during the election. For its turn, the republican Electoral Committee has already issued an official statement alleging that there were no complaints made in connection with the run of the parliamentary election.

PACE observers also made some critical, but mild, remarks to Chechen President Alu Alkhanov. For example, a Polish deputy, Tadeusz Ivinski, cited a polling station in Achkhoi-Martan where a fourth of a building facade was adorned with a placard of the "United Russia" Party. Also the observers noted the difference in the polling attendance in various regions of the republic. Also, they found it strange that they had not received any complains from the people about the run of the election.

As has been reported, the parliamentary election was held in Chechnya on November 27. According to head of the Central Electoral Committee of the Russian Federation, Alexander Veshniakov, the poll results are supposed to be made public before the end of the current week. Ballots from 306 polling stations, out of the total of 430, have already been processed. The "United Russia" Party won 61 percent of the votes, the CPRF nearly 12 percent, the SPS ("Union of the Right Forces") nearly 11 percent, and the Eurasian Union 4,12 percent. Therefore, the latter party has not overcome the 5-percent barrier. Less than 2 percent of those who came to the poll voted "against them all".
