Saturday the first Russian information TV channel broadcasting round-the-clock in the English language, "Russia Today", came on the air. Using a system of satellites, its programs go to audiences in Europe and Asia, Canada, the USA, Mexico, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
The bulk of the programs are domestic news, but "Russia Today" already has its offices in London, Paris, Jerusalem and Washington. Shortly the channel will also open offices in Cairo and New York. Prospects for opening offices in CIS countries are also being considered.
The commissioning of "Russia Today" has cost the federal budget about $30 million in 2005. The channel is headed by ex-RTR Kremlin pool journalist, Margaret Simonian, 26. Foreign specialists are widely represented on the channel staff.
