Commenting on the latest statements of "Naphtogaz Ukrainy" company about its alleged acceptance of market principles for purchasing Russian gas, a spokesman for Russian "Gazprom" company, Sergei Kupriyanov, said that the Ukrainian party means only an agreement for the first quarter of 2006. "Gazprom" is convinced that any accord on the gas issue may be reached only after Ukraine signs contracts for the whole of 2006, said S. Kupriyanov.
"We can speak of reaching an agreement only after contracts for the whole of 2006 have been signed. But "Naphtogaz" has agreed to ratify the detailed parameters of the contract only for the first quarter of 2006", said S. Kupriyanov, adding that it might mean "Thank you for the first quarter, and then we shall wait and see".
