The Ukrainian Supreme Rada has voted to sack Yuri Yekhanurov's cabinet. The decision was supported by 250 deputies out of 450.

The Supreme Rada has also voted in favor of setting up a commission to investigate financial and economic activities of "Naphthogaz Ukrainy" company, its personnel placement policies and terms and conditions for providing Russian gas to Ukraine in 2006. The resolution was adopted by 218 votes.

The deputies have also unanimously passed, in the first reading, a bill suspending any gas price hikes for Ukrainian people.

Before a new cabinet is sworn in, the current cabinet will continue to function as an interim administration for 60 days.

Yuri Yekhanurov headed Ukrainian government from September 2005. The preceding cabinet of Yulia Timoshenko had been sworn in on February 4 and sacked on September 8, 2005.

After the voting in parliament, the henceforth acting premier Yuri Yekhanurov said he would stay in charge of the government till a new cabinet is appointed by next parliament to be elected on March 26 this year.

"The current government will continue working till newly elected parliament appoints a new cabinet by majority vote", said Yekhanurov.

He also believes that his dismissal from the post of prime minister and the sacking of his cabinet will favorably affect the rating of the "Our Ukraine" electoral bloc. "I think it will have a positive impact, as our people like to be on the side of the underdog", he said.

The acting premier called the no-confidence vote by the Supreme Rada a political reprisal that would have no legal meaning.

Besides, says Yekhanurov, the decision to sack his government would weaken Ukraine's positions at the gas talks with Russia. "Our positions on the gas issue at the talks will be undermined", he said.

In the acting premier's opinion, now it would be up to parliament to decide what should be done to assure gas supplies to Ukraine. At the same time he noted that he would continue working on Russia's proposals for an inter-governmental agreement on gas supplies to Ukraine.

Yuri Yekhanurov also said that a new vice premier had been appointed, but declined to give his name. He noted that the new vice premier would deal with questions of the fuel and energy complex. After the resignation of vice premier for regional policies, Roman Bezsmertny, the post of one vice premier had remained vacant.
