US government investigators assigned to check the tightness of US borders and border security measures managed to slip across the border radioactive materials sufficient to manufacture two "dirty bombs", reported American TV news channel CNN yesterday.
These data have been disclosed in a report on the efficiency of the anti-terrorist measures prepared for US Senate.
The document says that US government investigators working in two teams under the guise of representatives of a "commercial company" managed to acquire radioactive matter abroad and then slip it across US southern and northern borders. The TV news report gave no indication of the countries where the materials had been bought, nor the type of the radioactive matter.
A "dirty bomb" is said to be an explosive device where potential terrorists can put radioactive or chemical substances to be spread over densely populated areas.
