Several heads of Hungarian-speaking villages in the Trans-Carpathia requested the Hungarian government to grant them political asylum on the grounds of being persecuted in Ukraine for their political sympathies.
According to the chairmen of the village councils, at the recent presidential elections in Ukraine these villages had voted in favor of V. Yanukovich, and when V. Yushchenko came to power many of the chairmen had been removed from their posts. By conducting various "inspections" and opening criminal cases, the new power is forcing them to leave their posts "on their own request".
Such coerced removal of local chairmen is taking place in many villages of the region. Also, some heads of the Trans-Carpathian educational institutions have declared their intention to emigrate to Russia to seek refuge from political persecution.
