An emergency regime will be imposed in the Khabarovsk Territory starting from November 25, due to a possible contamination of the Amur river after an accident at a chemical plant in China. This was disclosed today by first deputy premier of the Territory's government Vladimir Popov who chaired a meeting of the commission for emergency situations.

The contaminated waters of the Sungary river are moving towards the Amur river at a speed of about 100 km a day. Water samples are being taken every two hours. In Khabarovsk it is proposed to organize drinking water delivery from wells. The systems of hot water supply and central heating will continue operating. Residents have been warned against using water from the heating system for drinking and cooking. The discharge of toxic substances into the Sungary river took place after an accident at a chemical plant in the Chinese province of Jilin on November 13.

Residents of Khabarovsk alarmed by reports of a possible contamination of the Amur river after an explosion at the chemical plant in China are buying up and hoarding drinking water. Many sellers have raised the prices, and some companies dealing in water supply from artesian wells have stopped taking orders because of the rush.

"In Khabarovsk water supply will not be limited, as it may lead to a disruption of heat supply. People are recommended not to drink tap water", said V. Popov. According to him, water reserves in Khabarovsk represent 50,000 cubic meters, and 60 tank trucks will transport water to hospitals, schools and children's homes. The contaminated waters are expected to reach Khabarovsk on December 1.
