Water treatment plants in Khabarovsk will not be able to process all the contaminated water
Water treatment plants in Khabarovsk are not designed to decontaminate benzols that may supposedly get in the Amur from the Chinese Sungary river.
"As has been reported, it is benzol-phenol compounds that have got in the Sungari river. Up to now, the city water treatment facilities have never had to deal with similar contaminants", Khabarovsk vice-mayor Andrei Volokzhanin told journalists.
The vice-mayor said that stock taking was underway at the moment to find out the volume of water reserves in the city. Also, water tank trucks are getting readied. A. Volokzhanin noted that a part of the city is supplied with water from artesian wells, not the Amur river. He did not rule out a suspension of classes at Khabarovsk schools, while water would be brought to hospitals by tank trucks. Before the contaminated water from the Sungari reaches the Amur river the Khabarovsk city administration, together with power engineers, will have to solve the technical problem of assuring uninterrupted heat supply to the city.
