The US Navy Command plans to increase the country's navy to 313 vessels by 2020. The realization of the plan proposed by Adm. Michael Mullen will cost the budget $13 billion a year, which is $3 billion more than the current US Navy budget. At present the US Navy comprises 281 vessels.
In particular, it is proposed to build 19 missile cruisers, but the first of them is not due to be completed until 2017. The plan also provides for building additional 31 amphibious assault ships. The Navy would still keep 11 aircraft carriers up to 2020. Aircraft carrier "John F. Kennedy" is proposed to be retired.
